      See off

  • Meaning: Go to the airport or station to say goodbye to someone
  • They’ve gone to the airport to see their son off
                               

    Set off

  • Meaning: Start a path/journey/travel.
  • We set off for Paris just after ten.


     Get in

  • Unliteral: Arrive (train, plane)
  • got in just after eight o’clock.
  • Literal: Enter
  • How did the thieves get in?


     Hold up

  • Unliteral: Delay someone or something.
  • Sorry I’m late – I was held up at work.
  • Literalsupport.
  • The columns are holding up the roof.


    Take off

  • Unliteral: When a plane departs or leaves the ground
  • The plane took off an hour late.
  • Literal: undressing, pull sth. away.
  • I took off my coat because the room was hot.


    Check in

  • Meaning: Arrive and register at a hotel or airport
  • Please check in at least an hour before departure.


    Get off

  • Meaning: Leave a bus, train, plane
  • We get off at the next station.


    Check out

  • Meaning: Leave the hotel after paying
  • We checked out at noon.


    Get away

  • Unliteral: To have a holiday or vacation
  • We’re hoping to get away for a few days at Easter.

    Get on

  • Unliteral: Enter a bus, train, plane, to climb on board

  • Literal: to take with someone, to carry something or making progress.

  • Meaning: Take someone to a place and leave them there
  • I’ll drop you off on my way home.


    Pick up

  • Unliteral: Let someone get into your car and take them somewhere
  • I’ll pick you up at the station.

    Set out

  • Meaning: Start a journey, especially a long journey
  • They set out on the last stage of their journey.


    Speed up

  • Meaning: Increase speed
  • Can you try and speed things up a bit?



    Look around

  • Meaning: Explore what is near you, in your area.
  • People came out of their houses and looked around.


    Hurry up

  • Meaning: Rush and not waste time.
  • Hurry up! We’re going to be late.


    Go back

  • Meaning: Go the place someone is leaving from to say goodbye
  • Dave and I go back twenty years.


    Look forward

  • Meaning: Look forward to something that is going to happen in the future
  • I’m looking forward to the weekend.


    Stop over

  • Meaning: Stay somewhere for a short time during a long journey.
  • I wanted to stop over in India on the way to Australia.
